UA Спецназ (Ukrainian Army Spetsnaz) Operator, Odessa 2021

No, we’re not done with UA SOF quite yet…

Based heavily on the structure and capabilities of-school Soviet Spetsnaz units, the Ukraine Army’s special ops wing comprises about 4,000 troops and has been heavily involved in combat ops since the Russian invasion of Crimea in 2014. Having expanded rapidly - both in terms of size and capabilities - since 2014, the UA SSO’s motto is “I come at you!” (Іду на ви!), a saying attributed to Sviatoslav I. This figure is meant to represent an operator from the 3rd Special Purpose Regiment.

UA SSO operators have a very unique “look”, hence my interest in the subject. Due to Ukraine’s geographic location, these personnel sport a very interesting mixture of Western and Eastern kit. Training and equipment from the US results in Multicam, PC danglers and GPNVG-18s, while the old Soviet influence results in sit-pads, Gorka suits and Russian pattern weaponry. Additionally, a number of training exchange programs with UK forces seem to have manifested in UA SSO’s preference for heavy belt kits, sometimes rejecting plate carriers altogether. Some units - such as the non-military SBU Alpha - even get kit from private donors and commercial vendors in exchange for free advertising. Very interesting stuff.
